Multan Sultans

Multan Sultans is a professional T20 cricket franchise from Pakistan which plays in Pakistan Super League PSL cricket league. They are playing the tournament since its third season in 2018 and are also the champions of PSL 6. They represent the city of Multan and their home ground is Multan Cricket Stadium.

The franchise saw many ownership shifts, form Schon Properties to Alamgir Khan Tareen and Ali Khan Tareen and then to only Alamgir Khan Tareen. Many former International cricket players are part of their management and coaching staff. Andy Flower is their head coach and Mushtaq Ahmed is their Assistant and Spin Bowling Coach. Shoaib Malik was their first captain and Muhammad Rizwan is their current captain.

Ownership History

The initial owners of this franchise was Schon Properties as they bought it for 8 years after winning the contract through bidding from 10 bidders. After the first season, the contract got terminated between the owners and PCB as they failed to pay the annual fee required by the board. PCB took over the control. A tender was passed immediately after this for buying the franchise once again. Alamgir Khan Tareen and Ali Khan Tareen from Multan Consortium won the bid and the team was bought by them. In 2021, after three years, Alamgir Khan Tareen became the only owner of the franchise.

Team Identity and Sponsors

The team logo and kit was revealed in a ceremony held on September 2017. Their logo features a horse rider will traditional dressing depicting the Saraiki culture of Southern Punjab. The team has two official colors blue and sea green.

PSL 3 2018

In their first season, Multan got eliminated in the group stage as they lost majority of their matches. Shoaib Malik was made captain for the inaugural season. Tom Moody was made head coach while Wasim Akram was their Director. The experienced Nadeem Khan was team’s manager.

They finished 5th at the points table with 9 points as they only managed to win 4 out of 10 matches in the group stage. One match rendered no result.

PSL 4 2019

After the disappointing first season, Multan made some changes in the team and management. Johan Botha was appointed as Head Coach of the team. Wasim Akram also left and joined Karachi Kings. The team again failed to qualify for the play-offs stage and got eliminated in the group stage.

Sultans finished at 5th place in the points table with 6 points as they only managed to win the 3 out of 10 group matches.

PSL 5 2020

Many changes were again made ahead of Pakistan Super League season 5. Shan Masood was made captain of the side while Andy Flower joined as the Head Coach. Multan Sultans reached the play-offs stage for the first time but unluckily lost both of their next matches against Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars and wasn’t able to reach the finals.

They finished first at the points table with 14 points in group stage as they won 6 out 10 matches. 2 matches rendered no result.

PSL 6 2021

This was the year for the Sultans as they were to win their first ever PSL title. They started their campaign on a low as they lost both of their matches against Peshawar Zalmi and Islamabad United. Lately they gathered the momentum and qualified for the play-offs stage, from there they got their place in the final and won it.

Multan Sultans finished second on the points table with 10 points as they won 5 out of 10 matches in group stage. In play-offs, they firstly won from Islamabad United to reach the finals and then beat Peshawar Zalmi to become the Pakistan Super League champions for the first time.

PSL 7 2022

After winning the last season, this was the time to defend their title. They started off brilliantly by crushing he opposition in almost every group stage match. They only lost to Lahore Qalandars in this season. The final match was between Sultans and Qalandars in which they lost by 42 runs and became runner-ups.

Multan finished first in the points table with 18 points as they won 9 out of 10 group stage matches.
